Bears - Bears -Bears!

Tour one of Canada's largest populations of Grizzly and Black Bears. See the bears in their natural wilderness home on the West Coast of Beautiful British Columbia. From the safety of a boat you will see bears feeding along the shores of breathtaking Bute Inlet and fishing for salmon along the banks of the Orford River.

Discovery Charters & Lodging operates their bear tours from Campbell River, a picturesque seaside town on Vancouver Island off the west coast of British Columbia, Canada, during Sept and Oct as well as May and June. As of July 1 when we begin to operate fishing charters out of Telegraph Cove BC tours are no longer possible out of Campbell River until we return in sept.

Our tours are intended to cater to individuals, couples and private family groups who are looking for solitude and serenity as they experience the best of what Super Natural BC has to offer.

We start our bear tours in Campbell River. It doesn't take long to load up our large, comfortable cruiser (we only accept a maximum of 4 people per tour) and we are soon on our way along discovery passage, to Bute Inlet. This exciting journey is enjoyed from the vantage point of our safe, modern 22 Ft cruiser equipped with a porta potti for the ladies.

The Grizzly Bear Viewing Tours

As we wind through the narrow channels of the Discovery Archipeligo (world renowned for it's outdoor recreation opportunities) we will be keeping a sharp eye to for deer, black bears, grizzly bears, Orca's, Whales, seals, otters, sea lions, dolphins and a fantastic variety of birds. Have your camera ready!

Our destination is spectacular Bute Inlet (a fjord slicing some 30 miles deep into the rugged BC coastline). Bute Inlet will render you awestruck with its beautiful mountains, glaciers, lush estuaries and breathtaking waterfalls. And this time of year the fall colors will literally take your breath away. This is a very special place and you are guaranteed to enjoy the trip as we head for prime grizzly bear country in a remote part of the Great Bear Rain Forest.

Bute Inlet

This time of year the waters are alive with Salmon, some will spawn a new generation while others will become the main food source for the Bears we have come to see.

Our destination is uninhabited; no people reside here permanently. Pristine wilderness, just you (and your guides) and the Bears.

We will spend about 3 hours locating and watching Grizzly Bears at work (fishing) and at play. Curious Grizzlies, quarreling grizzlies, feasting grizzlies and grizzlies on the move!

When you've had your fill of searching for Grizzly Bears in their spectacular natural home we will travel back to Campbell River. On our return trip you'll see more of the unforgettable pristine scenery and wild nature that has made the incomparable Bute Inlet so famous.

The Scenery is spectacular, the Grizzly Bears are awesome, Campbell River is beautiful and relaxing and there is good food and dining to be had.

Black Bear Tour Packages
April 19 - June 30  2007

Our black bear tour is a marine adventure where we search the beautiful coastline of the Discovery Archipelago by boat for feeding Black bears (and sometimes Grizzlies) on the beaches and shoreline. This cunning method of viewing bears is unique to Canada's West Coast. It allows us to observe the bears (and their cubs!) in their natural habitat without disturbing them or endangering us. You won't believe it until you experience it!

We start our Spring Bear Adventure when you board our large, comfortable cruiser at scenic Gowland Harbor on picturesque Quadra Island or Campbell River. The action starts immediately with sightings of harbor seals and their young pups at play right in the harbor. We then make a quick check of some of the many bald eagle nests in the area, if we're lucky we may see a parent feeding a chick.

The striking Copper Bluffs are next on the agenda. Here we can observe Cormorants and Pigeon Guillemots as they fish and sit on their nests. An added bonus to a trip this time of year is the abundance of beautiful wild flowers that cascade down the bluffs to the waters edge.

From there we'll head for Bear Country through exciting Seymour Narrows with its rapids and whirlpools. This thrilling passage is exhilarating in our safe, modern vessel.

As we travel through Discovery Passage and some of the other narrow channels of the Discovery Archipelago we will watch out for Dahl Porpoises, Harbor Porpoises, Pacific White Sided Dolphins, Sea lions, Otters, Minke Whales and, if we are lucky, perhaps Orcas (Killer Whales). As we enjoy the surroundings we also keep a sharp look out for Black bears (and sometimes Grizzly bears) feeding on spring grasses and shellfish on the beach.

An air of anticipation grips the boat when we see a bear on the beach and prepare to glide in to observe from the safety of our vessel. Conversation becomes hushed and our guests realize how close we can get to a sow (female bear) and her three cubs without raising the ire of the protective mother or interfering with the playful pursuits of the cubs. As we get close to the shore you can actually hear them breathe!

For their part the bears do no more than give the boat a cursory glance before resuming their foraging. Children and adults alike will be drawn to the side of the boat, riveted by this peek into the natural life of bears. You'll go home with pictures that your friends will never believe you took yourself.

On this tour you will see many species of birds including Eagles and Wood Ducks and you'll have time to observe and enjoy them during our trip over to spectacular Bute Inlet (a major fjord on the British Columbia coast). While cruising along the shore you'll see cascading waterfalls, snow-capped mountains and glaciers, some rising to 10,000 ft from the Inlet floor. You will also see a wide range of ancient rainforest flora and fauna. This region is known as the southern part of "The Great Bear Rain Forest" and bears are plentiful, which is why we bring you here!

FYI - The month of September, at the beginning of the prime Grizzly Bear season, is good fishing season for large Chinooks (Kings) including Tyees (fish over 30 lbs), large northern Coho (Silvers - some over 20lbs) and an abundance of Pink Salmon. October brings the hard fighting Chum Salmon. These fish average about 12-15lbs and are the most powerful Salmon pound for pound. There is some Coho (Silver) fishing in October.

Bute Inlet

There is so much more to Discovery Charters & Lodging than just bears. We truly are situated in paradise and you will enjoy the beautiful old growth gardens with their late spring, early summer flowers.
