Orca Tours

 

"Orcas at 12 o'clock!"  The announcement brings everybody to the front of the boat, binoculars and cameras at the ready. We don't want to disturb the whales so we cut our engines and drift, letting them come to us. The Killer Whales soon blow and surface, their impossibly huge dorsal fins slicing the surface of the water like a hot knife through butter. This time they're much closer and an air of eager anticipation seizes the boat.

 

surface	Suddenly the pod is almost on top of us. Two cow Orcas and a calf surface to the left of the boat, so close you can see them clearly as they linger, suspended in the crystal water.  When they dive we can still see them 10, 20, 30ft below the surface. It's amazing how clear and clean the waters are in Johnstone Straights.

The next sighting is directly in front of the boat. A large bull Orca surfaces so close you can feel the mist from his blowhole in your face. The bull then dives directly under our vessel, his huge dorsal fin just clearing the hull of the boat. When it's all over you stand in awe of the beauty, power and grace of these magnificent whales you have just observed in their natural home off the Coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
